Although I have read many books this past week, Yard Sale deserves its own post. I love all of Eve Bunting's books so I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of her new book, Yard Sale, illustrated by Lauren Castillo. This book is a must read so if you have it on your TBR list, move it straight to the top and enjoy! It is not only beautifully written and illustrated, but contains a powerful message for readers of all ages about family, love, and the meaning of home.
In this story, a family has to move from their well-loved house to a much smaller place due to financial reasons and must sell the majority of their belongings at a yard sale since there will be no room for it all. Callie, the young girl, is having a difficult time watching all of her memory-filled items being sold to strangers and at times doesn't want to part with them. Although most of the items that once filled their house are sold and gone, the family still has one another in the end. Callie realizes that although material items are gone, they will always have a "home" with one another.
Yard Sale would be a perfect read aloud, mentor in writing workshop, and mentor in reading workshop during character and social issues units. It will spark rich conversations in the classroom and can be a go-to text throughout the year in many ways! Thank you Eve Bunting and Lauren Castillo for bringing Callie and her family into our reading lives!
Happy reading! :)
